Something in the air tonight The room just has an edge You walked in, I saw you there As I smoked a cigarette Bring the storm down Lift our faces to the night I watch you circling closer Dance into my light That our paths should cross again Wild tendrils find their ground Wet season always calls us in Slick orange earth, dark velvet clouds Bring the storm down Lift our faces to the night I watch you circle closer Dance into my light Na-djorra! A soft flash on the horizon catches the edge of our minds and we find we're stumbling blind into the dark Rumbling across the velvet sky a cracking snare calls us calls us out to the open air Everyone is quiet waiting for the change Faces to the sky we're crazy for the rain Holding for the shift a hint of breeze the lift of air a kiss of sweet release Holding our breath we close our eyes and open our hearts to the leaden skies Then she draws upon herself and pours a heavy heart upon us all Big, round, fat, bold, hot a mirror world in every drop The smell of new rain on dirt fills our giddy heads and we're all circling drinking in the rain and we're all sparkling dancing in the rain I sense your cedar breath I taste your salty neck We're turning in the rain Hold me as we circle and leaning back we're turning bodies bending acquiescing lean and wet and sweet caressing In the rain we move together in the rain It's our season We can dance

Everything fades But never your bright beauty I would climb to touch the sky Gather ochres, ash and bone Trace your every line onto ancient stone Over and over I’d swim deep into the sea Gather shell, driftwood and string I’d call your every line, until the waves could sing Over and over and over I would camp out on the land Gather salt and blood and dew I’d chorus with the birds, until your songlines are renewed Over and over and over Shake out the sky! Let it settle round my steely bones Everything fades But never your bright beauty

When We Fall 03:22
When you fall I can’t reach the ends of you When you fall My old heart just breaks for you When you fall You go so deep there’s nothing left I know of you when you fall When you fly I can’t reach the ends of you You run a mile I’m careful to be clear of you When you fly You spend it all and you feel so alive when you fly I remember when we grew Together one on one I remember how we loved Together one on one I recall your brightness Our ventures, your kind heart Then one day we fell apart Day by day we fell apart And then I knew We fell apart, and I fell from you When I fall I can’t reach the ends of you When you fall My old heart just breaks for you when you fall

Pretty Words 04:21
I could just surrender Like I never have before Maybe I’ll surrender Let love through the door I’ve cleared the steps, I’ve swept the path I’ve played it in my mind I won’t waste my pretty words On a stony heart this time Wasted all my pretty words All so finely tuned They seem to flow so easily When they’re about you Falling to the thrall of you How tempting to let go Glide into your slipstream Outside the ebb and flow We could fall so easily Blinded by romance Under the swelling tide of love We’re swept into the dance Wasted all my pretty words All so finely tuned They seem to flow so easily When I’m around you Everything I know and love And all that I have learned The give and take, the push and pull Never enough returned I could choose the harder path Drag my heart up to the shore And soak it in the shallows So I could love some more Wasted all my pretty words Gave them away for free They all flow so easily When they’re not about me

Trouble 04:11
On the brink of one white line On the edge of one dark soul Not gonna choose the right side I know I’m gonna fall And all the consequences wind Down the dark stone steps To a well of velvet nights Down to the urging depths I found trouble, trouble found me But shame has no claim on my name The angels don’t hear, Hail Marys don’t last So I kiss life and dance with the past Before your time I’d wake in fright Convinced I’d betrayed Become the woman waiting for me There, there in the shade Shout your loving words out loud For prayer is a silent plea The past is always taunting Come dance, come dance with me I found trouble, trouble found me But shame has no claim on my name The angels don’t hear, Hail Marys don’t last So I kiss life and dance with the past

Four days on a bender Three hits till the end Fuel gauge on empty Late night bars again I got nothin' but ambition And a way to make it pay I'll pick a couple pockets They'll never spot the play Set 'em up, I'll smash 'em down Build 'em up again Push it to the limit Spin it Hurricane Faster mama, faster The sound of a next win One more hit for luck And then one more magic spin Lose the psycho boyfriend Bring my son here to stay Turn the music way up high Get out of the way Set 'em up, I'll smash 'em down Build 'em up again Push it to the limit Spin it Hurricane Well I hate your crazy spinnin' wheel Hate your stupid cards Pull all the cherries in a row My luck just needs a charge I'm a reckless usin' mama A beat up no good wife But winnin' on this last hand Could kick start a life Set 'em up, I'll smash 'em down I'll build 'em up again Push it to the limit I'm a spinnin' Hurricane Take away the pain Let me start again I'm just your little sister And your spinnin' Hurricane

I’ll just slip away, you know I’ve fallen through I won’t feel remorse for this, and I won’t come back for you Tried to hold onto a dream, pretend there were no cracks You couldn’t give me what I need, I’ll never make it back to you Burst the blister with a pin, leave my heart tonight Dip the end in sweet perfume, and set our love alight We made this mess so walk away, don’t paint it with your lies Lost in a sea of compliments, or drowned in a lover’s disguise I banged my head, I stubbed my toe, your love weighs down on me Black dog snapping at my clothes, dark water gonna drown me Burst the blister with a pin, leave my heart tonight Dip the end in sweet perfume, and set our love alight Gleaming on the surface, or diving to the deep I watch the bubbles rising, I just wanna breathe Burst the blister with a pin, leave my heart tonight Dip the end in sweet perfume, nothing survives tonight

Let the world fly by Cut your curses to the curve Fling your anger wildly Screaming to be heard A sigh goes further than a shout A sigh goes further Falling into melancholy A feather bed Counting backwards quietly You lose the thread A sigh goes further than a shout A sigh goes further You can’t help the birds of sadness flying overhead You can only try to stop them nesting in your hair Come wind! Blow away these dried up tears Come calm! Show a new day, a sail unfurled Come dreams! Turn the trouble into new ideas Come sun! Burn your rose and gold Onto a brave old world
9.
All the birds sit in a row, We watch them land, we watch them go It’s fly or fall, I know And I keep falling back to you Falling from the pedestal, you made so lovingly Up here the air is thinner, I can hardly breathe I cannot jump, I cannot fly You know I’m gonna leave You have claimed the darkness as a shadow battle zone I’m caught up in the crossfire, the night’s not mine to own I’m gonna run, I’m gonna climb You know I’m gonna leave You can’t claim my body, you can’t claim our love I’m frightened I’ll fall back again, that freedom’s not enough I couldn’t love you more I couldn’t love you more So I leave before the sunrise, I count my blessings twice I hear the evening birds, I’ll be counting stars tonight I couldn’t love you more I couldn’t love you more And through the rain beaded pane she saw her future here forever after, waiting for her touch, a golden dream and all it gathers over and under and over and on and on Women of the ages! Stoic, waiting, withering women Under and over and on and on a procession of hands and mouths waiting for care and food and time and patience and her warm dark velvet deep, again and over and under and on, sweet, sweet release Ancient aching woman! Un-lonely for another Tethered to house and well and sink and yard pushing a swing again and again on a windy barren hill littered with needles and condoms twisted and discarded She said She said I’ve never been abandoned I’ve never been alone I’ve never been abandoned I’ve never been alone I couldn’t love you more I couldn’t love you more

Water Fall 03:38
Early when the light is soft, still calm from faded stars She plucks the silence quietly, a chorus of guitars And note by note the morning, scares off the scattered grey Birds invoke a streak of blue, to weave her through the day Fall upon her water Wash away her pain Dance around her steely heart Spiral down the drain Anger bleeds through sadness, bright stranger in her breast A nod to sorrow passing - dull, unwelcome guest Spit your ragged curses, breathe out your heavy fear This day, more than any, you’ll feel calm and clear Fall upon her water Wash away her pain Dance around her steely heart Spiral down the drain No angel wings in this old house, no floating feather falls Let your anger be your mantle, until the next stage calls Fall upon her water Wash away her pain Dance round her steely heart Spiral down the drain

Last Balloon 03:07
This is the last balloon I keep it in a drawer It is my favourite plaything They don’t make these anymore This is the last balloon Banned in twenty-two I keep it wrapped in silk It’s precious, taboo This is the last balloon Hidden from the amnesty I’ll never give her freedom Lethal weapon in the sea This is the last balloon She’s never taken flight A half life of a billion days She is locked up out of sight And then just once a year On the day my father died I fill her from the air in me And finger seal her lips so tight I kiss the floating gossamer A feather light embrace Gently, just a touch of love Just a moment free in space This is the last balloon The last we ever saw I quietly fold her velvet form in silk and I lock the drawer
12.
Last Train 05:00
On a long train ride, a slow train ride All the peace and quiet, of a long train ride I love the view, a long slow view I love the view, and being with you Smile with your eyes at me Laugh with your lines Turn your whole face to me Show me the signs Walking the straight line, or wasting the chance Tasting the sweet spot, and knowing the dance When all is forgiven The facts are well worn The memories are folding The curtains are drawn For the world needs an ending, the last wave is here A moment of love, then we all disappear We did not look for All that we see I did not listen for Your breath in me Yet here we are On a long train ride, all the peace and quiet I love the view, and being with you
13.
Crooked Tree 05:20
Give me a crooked tree any day Pulling life from dirt and broken bone Songlines scribbled under bark Drawn in sand and carved on stone Give me the bone nasal tones of barely moving lips Vowels so flat there’s hardly room to breathe A thread of desert song Winding high and falling, floating on the breeze Give me the secrets of the land any day Dirt and sweat and woodsmoke A flash of colour in the dark Opal fire locked in ancient stone Give me a crooked tree any day Taut and twisted, strong and lean There’s beauty in every line Like man of the land, a crooked tree
14.
Walk On 05:17
Entwined in attire of barely visible means She leaves for the station, one glove in her hand Throwing warmth to the wind and waving Watch, as she twists it away just as planned There it goes, the gauntlet - she walks on And there in the jangled rain, she sees Velvet clouds gather a mourning word Caught in a nest of jewel red debris A dried up rat and a barely feathered bird She walks on Rippling as the tunnel trembled Twisting quietly, caught in a storm Tasting the flight and sensing a fight She walks on alone, the hour before dawn She walks on Her skirt sways dizzily in the breeze At her age, she needs no disguise She gives you her smile, her eyes and her shine Maybe she laughs or maybe she cries No mind - she walks on A woman alone in her power, in her prime She’s walking on proudly, reclaiming the night It’s shine or shade she cries, and he fades before her eyes She's been waiting for this for a long, long time She walks on Walking alone, having it all Sensing her power and letting it roar Her respect, the only thing worth fighting for Just be proud not to want to hate her anymore She walks on

about

‘Brave Old World by Bronwyn Eather is well named, as the record transports you to some imaginary smoky jazz bar . Once inside it, you find that you can’t keep your eyes (and ears) off the stage.
Organic, moody, and sometimes a dark embrace, as the night unfolds; you leave in the wee hours, uncertain where the time has gone; but knowing you’ll be back.’ William Bowden (Mastering Engineer)

The album 'Brave Old World' explores the choices and consequences of women in an age where convention is outmoded, though we have not yet found the new stories to replace it. This is as true of the music industry as it is of the world at large. A sense of peril touches the edges of our consciousness, and we are left to just tell the stories. Stories within stories. Some will have endings, and some will circle back on themselves, yearning for their place in a new world.

Most of these songs were written quickly within a three-week period in the winter of 2018. We wanted them to have the full flavour of fresh, live sounding band songs rather than a studio album. The beds were recorded in my home rehearsal studio. More guitar and vocal lines were later added at Jason Mannell's studio in Mona Vale.
